Chichester road to close for traffic signal bulb switch over

A main road in West Sussex will be closed for more than six weeks so traditional traffic signal halogen light bulbs can be replaced with energy-efficient alternatives.

Work on installing LEDs in Chichester at the junction of Stockbridge Road, Southgate, and Basin Road, will begin on Monday and end by 7 November, West Sussex County Council (WSCC) said.

Stockbridge Road will be closed in both directions and a diversion will be in place, although people will still be able to access businesses and the railway station car park.

The council said replacing the halogen bulbs will help it to achieve its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

The work is part of a scheme to replace 993 traffic signal lamps in West Sussex with LEDs, which the council said would only need to be changed once a decade, rather than every year.

WSCC said the work would bring several benefits, including cost savings, less disruption for road users, and a reduction in carbon and material waste from operating the traffic signals.

The upcoming work will also see improvements for pedestrians, including updated tactile paving and a new cross point.

Repairs to street lights in the area will be carried out at the same time in an effort to minimise disruption, WSCC added.
