Man charged after death of 80-year-old man

A man has been charged with murder after the death of an 80-year-old man in West Sussex.

Sussex Police said Anthony Scarrott was found with serious injuries at an address in Westcourt Road, Worthing, at about 20:20 BST on 11 September. He died in hospital three days later.

Arno Engels, 39, of no fixed address, was originally arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed before being re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

He has been remanded into custody and is set to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court later.

Det Insp Amanda Zinyama, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “This is tragic incident, and our thoughts are with [Anthony’s] family and friends.”

She said the victim and suspect were known to each other and the force was not looking for anyone else.

Det Insp Zinyama appealed for anyone who may have seen or helped Mr Scarrott in Westcourt Road between 19:20 and 19:40 on the evening he was injured to come forward.

The force said a police presence would remain in the area as investigations continued.
